BSD Release: FreeBSD 8.0
FreeBSD 8.0, a major new update of the popular operating system for servers, desktops and embedded devices, has been officially released: “The FreeBSD Release Engineering team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE. This release starts off the new 8-STABLE branch which improves on the functionality of FreeBSD 7.X and introduces many new features. Some of the highlights: Xen Dom-U, VirtualBox guest and host, hierarchal jails; NFSv3 GSSAPI support, experimental NFSv4 client and server; 802.11s D3.03 wireless mesh networking and Virtual Access Point support; ZFS no longer in experimental status; ground-up rewrite of USB, including USB target support; continued SMP scalability improvements in many areas, especially VFS; revised network link layer subsystem; experimental MIPS architecture support.”

Distribution Release: Linux Mint 8
Clement Lefebvre has announced the release of Linux Mint 8, a beginner-friendly, Ubuntu-based desktop Linux distribution: “The team is proud to announce the stable release of Linux Mint 8, code name ‘Helena’. The 8th release of Linux Mint comes with numerous bug fixes and a lot of improvements. In particular, Linux Mint 8 comes with support for OEM installs, a brand new Upload Manager, the menu now allows you to configure custom places, the update manager now lets you define packages for which you don’t want to receive updates,the software manager now features multiple installation and removal of software and many of the tools’ graphical interfaces were enhanced.”

KNOPPIX 6.2
Klaus Knopper has released KNOPPIX 6.2, a new version of the popular Debian-based live CD/DVD with LXDE as the default desktop: “The current version 6.2 has been completely updated from Debian ‘Lenny’, ‘Testing’ and ‘Unstable’, and uses kernel 2.6.31.6 and X.Org 7.4. Microknoppix is a complete rewrite of the KNOPPIX boot system from version 6.0 and up, with the following features: high compatibility with its Debian base; accelerated boot procedure; LXDE as graphical environment – a very slim and fast desktop with extremely short start time and low resource requirements; amount of installed software greatly reduced in the CD edition; network configuration handled by NetworkManager….”

ZevenOS 2.0
Leszek Lesner has announced the release of ZevenOS 2.0, a Xubuntu-based distribution and live CD featuring the Xfce desktop and BeOS-like artwork: “We are proud to announce the release of ZevenOS 2.0. ZevenOS 2.0 is based upon Ubuntu 9.10; it brings big changes like a completely new audio subsystem (PulseAudio), switch from HAL to DeviceKit, MagiKit – a standard application management layer, Remaster-Kit for easy ISO re-mastering, Encode and Super Encode – an all-in-one multimedia converting application, MAGI 2 – an application launcher, installer and configuration center. Development Release: openSUSE 11.2 RC2
Joe Brockmeier has announced the availability of the second and final release candidate for openSUSE 11.2: “This is it folks! We’re almost there for openSUSE 11.2. Time to grab the final 11.2 release candidate and shake out any remaining bugs to get the lizard ready for release. This release includes an updated kernel, Samba, Firefox, and more. Release Candidate 2 includes a few new packages, and several of the ‘most annoying bugs’ in RC1 have been fixed. New packages include: Linux kernel 2.6.31.5, SeaMonkey 2.0, Firefox 3.5.4, Samba 3.4.2, X.Org Server 1.6.5.”

Mythbuntu 9.10
Mythbuntu 9.10, a distribution designed for home theatre systems and featuring MythTV, has been released: “Mythbuntu is built upon the base of Ubuntu and thus has all the features of Ubuntu. Development Release: FreeBSD 8.0-RC2
Ken Smith has announced the availability of the second release candidate for FreeBSD 8.0: “The second of the release candidates for the FreeBSD 8.0 release cycle is now available. At this point we feel most of what has been discovered during public testing that is feasible to fix as part of the release process has been addressed. So the current plan is to have 8.0-RC3 in about two weeks. ISO images for all supported architectures are available on the FTP sites, and a ‘memory stick’ image is available for amd64/i386 architectures. For amd64/i386 architectures the CD-ROM and memory stick images include the documentation packages but no other packages. The DVD image includes the packages that will probably be available on the official release media.”
